iQIYI’s costume detective drama “Calming Waves (定风波)”, an original script, stars Wang Xingyue and Julia Xiang Han Zhi in the lead roles. In addition to lead actors, the series features Chen You Wei, Zhang Nan, He Luo Luo, Deng Kai in supporting roles.
Recently, the production team released an intense behind the scenes production special video as the drama wrapped filming after four months shooting period.
In the 159-second special making video, the opening scene immediately grabs viewers’ attention with dark and intense visuals. A man with bloodshot eyes, a woman, possibly in a red wedding dress is shot with an arrow, a person wearing a white mask performs a strange dance; and a group of people fight a fierce battle. The first 20 seconds of the trailer is fast-paced, and the suspenseful visuals is fully of mystery and horror.
Judging by the trailer, it seems that the production team put a significant effort into visual aesthetics. Not only are the visuals impressive, but the plot is fast-paced, and each key character seems to have their own distinct personality as a detective unit. The costumes are beautifully designed. Although not much has been revealed about the plot, Wang Xingyue’s lines are captivating, and Xiang Hanzhi’s fighting scenes are swift and graceful.
Since ‘Calming Waves’ is not based on popular IP but is an original script, it’s clear that the drama team needs more workout on marketing and promotion. The good news is, after the release of the first special trailer, netizens became more optimistic about the drama and are eagerly awaiting its premiere.
Wang Xingyue, 22, achieved a breakthrough this year with “The Double,” where he portrayed the cool and domineering Duke Xiao Heng. Despite young age, the actor has consistently delivered hit dramas. Last year, he gained significant attention and popularity with “Scent of Time” and “Story Of Kunning Palace.” In addition to “Calming Waves,” he has two more dramas lined up for release: the republican drama “Shadow Detective” and the costume romance “Perfect Match.”
Meanwhile, rising star Julia Xiang Han Zhi, also 22, has the upcoming costume drama “Love Of The Divine Tree” with Deng Wei.
